Northwind / meadow

Meadow notes

Grass, weather and the small business of a single field.

Kept for one plot on the low ground. Figures are approximate and the field does not consult the record.

This week: mild and damp, drying towards the weekend. The east hedge cut back after two years. Gate on the north side needs a new latch.

Log

The east hedge, finally

Two years overdue. The blackthorn had started into the path, which says something about how long it was left.

On rain gauges and rain

Reads low against the neighbour's gauge, consistently. Either the gauge is wrong or the field is, and the field has been here longer.

New latch for the north gate

The old one had worn to the point of guesswork. Fixed in an afternoon, plainly, but sound for another few years.

Hay

Cutting usually begins in the first half of June, weather permitting. The low corner stays wet most years; the rest rarely. Anyone baling should check the ground first, preferably before the forecast makes the decision for them.
